Freedom of movement

By the end of the 19th century, a new invention had captured the public's imagination: the bicycle. Practical and recreational at once, it gave riders a kind of freedom they had never experienced before.

Arnold, Schwinn & Company

In 1895, German-born mechanical engineer Ignaz Schwinn partnered with Adolph Arnold, a Chicago meat-industry investor. Together they founded Arnold, Schwinn & Company — the business that would later become the Schwinn Bicycle Company.

Racing into history

By 1896, the United States already counted hundreds of bicycle manufacturers, with Chicago alone home to more than a hundred. Schwinn launched its racing program that year and quickly became one of the most successful names on the circuit.

Pioneering home fitness

In 1965, Schwinn brought its engineering expertise indoors with the launch of the Deluxe Exerciser line — a step that helped establish the modern home fitness category.
